About Broadbeach

History

We’ve come a long way

Back in the 1800s, Broadbeach was chosen as the site of one of the Gold Coast’s first commercial enterprises when two young timber-getters, Ned Harper and William Duncan, established Harpers Wharf just north of the present-day Cascade Gardens Reserve.

Long before this, however, the Kombumerri people had claimed the area as their own holiday playground. The discovery of bora rings, middens and an ancient burial ground attest to the fact that the area was a favourite meeting place for Aboriginal tribes, who travelled hundreds of kilometres to attend tribal ceremonies, fish and collect a special hardwood used to make boomerangs.

Harper and Duncan were readily accepted by the local Aborigines as they stockpiled cedar, ash, beech, teak and mahogany cut out of the hinterland rainforests and transported it from their wharf to markets in Brisbane and Sydney.

It wasn’t until the 1920s and 30s that the Gold Coast started to emerge as a popular beach resort and, in 1934, a new seaside township by the name of ‘Broadbeach’ was surveyed, with 70 allotments offered for sale.

Initially, the only takers were small farmers and people looking for holiday homes and, during World War II, rutile mining along the beachfront sand dunes generated more economic activity than real estate sales. After the war, however, all mining ceased. The sand dunes were reclaimed, reconstructed and regreened, and the land was auctioned off for redevelopment.

The opening of Lennons Hotel on 17 December, 1956 established Broadbeach as a tourism centre and, for more than 30 years, this landmark resort was renowned all over Australia for its international-standard accommodation and world-class entertainment.

The popularity of Lennons encouraged developers to experiment with a new form of land reclamation, using sand pumping technology to create the Gold Coast’s now-famous canal estates. Florida Gardens in Broadbeach was one of the first, with 1000 home sites set alongside a 30-metre canal linking the Nerang River and Little Tallebudgera Creek.

The late 1970s and early 80s saw a new wave of development sweep through Broadbeach with the construction of the massive Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, Queensland’s very first casino Conrad Jupiters, and the Oasis shopping and hotel complex. The boutique fashion outlets and alfresco eateries created a whole new vibe, positioning Broadbeach as a favourite dining and shopping destination for locals and visitors alike.
